One of the most interesting marketing campaigns of recent times in my opinion is Compare the Markets. The marketing guys here seem to be trying some viral marketing which is usually seen in movies. The main character is a Russian meerkat named Aleksandr Orlov, has somehow got himself in a mess with similar website CompareTheMarket.com due to his similar domain name.

Im sure you have seen the adverts on TV but if not check it out on youtube…

Only a couple of businesses from my knowledge has had any moderate success with social media marketing, mainly due to the user of the social media left feeling bombarded by the company.

From an SEO point of view CompareTheMeerkat is doing very well theres a ton of links back to the main CompareTheMarket site so with all the viral linking the site is no doubt getting plenty of linkbacks through anchor text with the word “compare” in. This has to be good for business.

The marketing team behind the campaign have also created a FaceBook and Twitter account for this little critter; Aleksandr Orlov the Russian meerkat. The FaceBook account has so far massed 140,000 fans and no doubt it’s still growing!

Ive also checked the alexa ranking

Not bad aye….

And to just add to the fun if you look up “comparethemeerkat” in Google check out the Meta Description, classic!

I think in a few years time this will be remembered as one of the most memorable marketing campaigns.

Shimples….

It’s an incredibly clever, funny and likeable campaign.

More of this would really boost the value of advertising on TV.

The fact that they have gone to the effort of doing a proper website for the meerkats, rather than just a holding page for the proper site, really sets this campaign apart for those of us in the digital age.

    A really clever campaign.

Really? I wonder how much extra revenue the campaign is bringing in.

    Hi,

The thing is that they’ve focused on making it work and covering all bases. Perfectly executed.

It helps that the character is an appealing one, as well as the conceit of having the wrong spelling.

However, after all that, how much of it is due to having spent bucket-loads of money, not only on site creation, and direct content creation, such as twitter, but paying people to sound like normal people who are actually paid shills?

    Kind regards,

    MN

    He is a great Meerkat

The cleverness is in getting people to remember the name of the insurance company. We’ve been bombarded for a few years now with insurance ads and off the top of my head I can only think of two others that I can name – Churchill and Direct Line. The meerkat one goes a step further than those two because the web address is a catchy jingle rather than just a monotonous tone speaking through the ad – as is usually the case – adding the dot.com.

Everybody has a different sense of humour and whilst you don’t like it meerkats have endless cute appeal and they’ve cleverly tapped into that. Alexandsr has no doubt taken his rightful place among memorable animal ads alongside the Andrex puppy.

If I were considering changing my insurance company, I know I’d be visiting them – I’m not stupid enough to buy the product just because of the meerkat but their creativity with the advertising does peak my curiosity.

i do Social Media Marketing specially when promoting a new website or an affiliate product. Social media is more effective than offline advertising in my opinion.
